FAQs - ORP Sensor

What is ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential)?

ORP, short for Oxidation-Reduction Potential, describes the overall tendency of an aqueous solution to gain or lose electrons. It is a comprehensive indicator of the oxidizing or reducing capacity of water and is widely used in water treatment, environmental monitoring, food and beverage processing, and industrial process control.

ORP is expressed in millivolts (mV) and is measured as the electric potential difference between an inert sensing electrode and a stable reference electrode. The sensing electrode is typically made of platinum or gold. These noble metals do not participate in chemical reactions; instead, they provide a conductive surface on which electron exchange from the solution establishes an equilibrium potential. The reference electrode is most commonly silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl), which provides a constant reference potential.

When immersed in a solution, the ORP electrode system reflects the combined redox activity of all oxidizing and reducing species present, rather than the concentration of any single compound. In general, a positive ORP value indicates an oxidizing environment, while a negative ORP value indicates a reducing environment.

Because ORP represents the overall redox condition of water, it is widely applied to evaluate disinfection effectiveness, biological activity, corrosion tendency, and general water quality status.

Why do we need to measure ORP?

ORP stands for the oxidation-reduction potential of a solution, which is an important indicator of water quality. It cannot independently judge the quality of water, but it can integrate other water quality indicators to reflect the ecological environment in the aquarium system. The higher the oxidation-reduction potential, the stronger the oxidation, and the lower the potential, the weaker the oxidation. A positive potential indicates that the solution shows a certain degree of oxidation, and a negative potential indicates that the solution shows reduction.

The actual meaning of orp measurement has the following situations:
1. Indirectly reflects the degree of concentration accumulation of nitric acid and other substances in the water.
2. Monitor the oxidation efficiency of microorganisms in filtration.
3. Reflect the concentration of certain inorganic substances in the water and the state of aquatic organisms.

Can ORP reflect pH?

ORP value is affected by PH value, but ORP cannot reflect the specific value of PH.

How to maintain OPR probe? How to calibrate?
  1. ORP sensors generally do not require routine maintenance. If a clear malfunction occurs, do not open or attempt to repair the sensor yourself. Please contact us as soon as possible.
  2. There is an appropriate amount of storage solution inside the protective cap at the front of the electrode. The electrode tip is immersed in this solution to keep the glass bulb and liquid junction activated. Before measurement, unscrew the protective cap, remove the electrode, and rinse it with pure water before use.
  3. Preparation of electrode storage solution: Take one packet of ORP 4.00 buffer solution and dissolve it in 250 mL of pure water, then add 56 g of analytical grade potassium chloride. Heat gently on an electric stove and stir until completely dissolved. Alternatively, a 3.3 M potassium chloride solution may be used. Preparation method: dissolve 25 g of analytical grade potassium chloride in 100 mL of pure water.
  4. The glass bulb at the front of the electrode must not come into contact with hard objects. Any damage or abrasion will cause the electrode to fail.
  5. Before measurement, remove any air bubbles inside the glass bulb, otherwise the measurement result will be affected. During measurement, gently stir the electrode in the test solution and then keep it still to accelerate response.
  6. The electrode should be cleaned with deionized water before and after measurement to ensure accuracy.
  7. After long term use, ORP electrodes may become passivated, which is characterized by reduced sensitivity, slow response, and inaccurate readings.
For non metal electrodes: soak the glass bulb at the lower end of the electrode in 0.1 M dilute hydrochloric acid for 24 hours (preparation of 0.1 M dilute hydrochloric acid: dilute 9 mL of hydrochloric acid with distilled water to 1000 mL), then soak it in 3.3 M potassium chloride solution for another 24 hours. If the passivation is severe and soaking in 0.1 M hydrochloric acid is ineffective, the glass bulb end of the ORP electrode may be immersed in 4% HF (hydrofluoric acid) for 3 to 5 seconds. Then rinse thoroughly with pure water and soak in 3.3 M potassium chloride solution for 24 hours to restore performance.
  8. For antimony electrodes: polish the metal tip with fine sandpaper until a metallic luster appears to restore performance.
  9. Contamination of the glass bulb or blockage of the liquid junction can also cause electrode passivation. In this case, clean the electrode with an appropriate solution according to the type of contaminant. Details are as follows:
Inorganic metal oxides: clean with dilute acid below 1 M
Organic oils and grease: clean with dilute detergent (weakly alkaline)
Resins and polymer substances: clean with alcohol, acetone, or ether
Protein or blood deposits: clean with acidic enzyme solution
Pigments: clean with dilute bleach or hydrogen peroxide
If the platinum surface is seriously contaminated and an oxide film has formed, toothpaste may be applied to the platinum surface and gently rubbed to restore its luster.
  10. Masa pakai elektroda sekitar satu tahun. Setelah menua, elektroda harus diganti tepat waktu.
  11. Sebelum mengunci konektor kabel ke konektor perangkat, jangan letakkan bagian konektor ke dalam air.
What is an ORP sensor?

It is an electrochemical sensor used to measure the oxidation reduction potential in solutions, expressed in millivolts (mV). It reflects the relative strength of oxidizing or reducing agents present in a solution, that is, the tendency of the solution to accept electrons (oxidizing ability) or release electrons (reducing ability).

What is the working principle of an ORP sensor?

An ORP sensor is typically composed of a noble metal measuring electrode, such as platinum or gold, and a reference electrode, such as Ag/AgCl.

During measurement, the noble metal electrode does not participate in chemical reactions, but it responds to the potential difference generated by electron exchange between oxidizing and reducing species in the solution. This potential difference is measured relative to the reference electrode.

What does the ORP value indicate?
  1. Oxidizing ability: A positive ORP value indicates that the solution has oxidizing properties, for example the presence of chlorine disinfectants, ozone, or hydrogen peroxide. The higher the positive value, the stronger the oxidizing ability.
  2. Reducing ability: A negative ORP value indicates that the solution has reducing properties, for example the presence of certain sulfides, ferrous ions, or microbial metabolites. The lower the negative value (the greater the absolute value), the stronger the reducing ability.
  3. Comprehensive water quality indicator: ORP is an important comprehensive water quality parameter and is commonly used to indicate disinfection efficiency, biological activity, and the progress of certain chemical reactions.
